Ultherapy Swelling: How Long, When to Call?

Swelling and redness after Ultherapy are common and pass, but blisters, oozing, or a stiff side of the face need a call. How to tell them apart at home.

Swelling after Ultherapy tends to be mild and short-lived, and it should look a little smaller each day. Instead of counting days, watch the direction it's moving. Even puffiness that's easing can be watched at home, while blisters, oozing, a dent where the lines went, or one side of your face moving stiffly are reasons to call right away.

In this article, we'll cover what expected swelling looks like, when numbness is worth a call, which changes shouldn't wait, how a hollow can show up as puffiness fades, how to keep a photo record, and how all of this fits a trip.

How Long Does Ultherapy Swelling Last?

Swelling is temporary, and it's one of the reactions you're most likely to notice. A review that pooled 19 studies with 506 patients found swelling, redness, and soreness after treatment more often than anything else, and it described them as passing reactions without giving a set number of days. Serious problems were rarely described in those published papers.

Here's what falls in the expected range:

  • Puffiness along the treated areas, about the same on both sides

  • Pinkness that fades instead of spreading

  • Tenderness when you press, or a warm, heavy feeling right after the session

Because the papers don't give a day count, the trend is your guide. If the swelling looks smaller tomorrow than today, it's on track. If one side swells much more than the other the next morning, or the redness starts to creep outward, take a photo and send it in. That picture becomes the starting point for comparing at your follow-up.

Is Numbness or Tingling After Ultherapy Normal?

Numbness or tingling is uncommon, but it does turn up in reports. In a US database where patients and clinics file problems with medical devices, numbness in one spot, odd prickly sensations, nerve damage, and a drooping eyelid were among the issues reported most often. Those records only capture problems after they happen. They show which reactions have occurred, but they can't tell you how likely they are.

Size and spread are what to watch. Even a small numb patch that keeps shrinking is worth mentioning to the clinic that treated you. If the numb area grows, or your smile or speech starts to feel uneven, contact the clinic right away. Don't wait for a scheduled follow-up in that case.

Which Ultherapy Side Effects Need a Call Right Away?

Some changes shouldn't be left to settle on their own. Take a clear photo and contact the clinic the same day if you notice any of these:

  • A blister or oozing where the lines were placed

  • Skin that breaks open into a sore or turns dark

  • A spot that looks sunken once the swelling goes down

  • One side of your face feeling frozen or moving oddly when you smile or talk

If a blister forms, never pop it. Keep the area clean while you reach out.

A case series of five patients described blistering, open sores, swelling that left the tissue thinned, and patches of dead skin, each after a single Ultherapy session. Its authors called these events rare but possibly underreported, and they listed local wound care as the first step of early management. A message with photos is a good start, but it can't replace an exam, so book a visit as soon as you can. If a change is severe or spreading fast, see a doctor in person right away.

Can Ultherapy Swelling Turn Into a Hollow Cheek?

It's rare, but it has been reported. The fat under treated skin can thin out, and in some reported cases the tissue first swelled and then sank as the swelling went down. That's why a dent that appears while puffiness fades belongs on the call list instead of the wait list.

Where the lines go shapes this risk. Ultherapy works with an ultrasound screen, so the doctor can see how thick the fat layer is before placing energy. Before any lines are planned, the doctor looks at your whole face, including how the left and right sides differ, and then decides where to work. If your cheeks are already slim, ask how many lines are planned there and at what depth.

A photo of your cheeks taken before treatment helps, too. Later on, it lets you tell a true hollow apart from a face that's settling back to its usual shape after the swelling.

How Should You Track Swelling at Home?

Dated photos make the call much easier, for you and for the doctor reading your message. The next morning and one week after treatment are simple checkpoints to start with.

  • Use the same room and the same light each time, without makeup

  • Take one from the front, one from each side, and one at a 45-degree angle, which shows the front of the cheek best

  • Write down the day redness started and the day it faded, and the day any blister appeared

When you send photos, say where it changed, when it started, and how it looks different. Those three details help separate healing that's on track from a problem that needs a closer look. It's also worth telling the doctor before treatment about any filler or thread lift you've had, and when.

Same room, same light, a date on each photo

Ultherapy Downtime When You're Traveling

There's no need to postpone your flight home for Ultherapy itself, as long as you didn't have sedation that day. Photos are a separate question. With around 300 shots or fewer, swelling is usually hard to spot on camera, so sightseeing pictures tend to work out. If your plan is larger than that, mention your travel dates when you book so there's room before any days full of photos.

It also helps to know what one visit can do. Filler can change shape the same day. Ultherapy tends to work gradually, nudging you back toward the way your face used to look instead of changing it overnight.

If anything on the call list shows up before you leave, reach out before you head to the airport. After you're home, photos of a new change can still go to the clinic through its consultation channel. A strong or fast-spreading reaction should be seen by a local doctor first.

The Bottom Line: Bring Dates, Photos, and One Question

The detail worth carrying into your consultation is where the lines will go on your face, especially in areas with little fat. Ask how those spots will be handled. That one answer makes the risk of a hollow much easier to judge.

When you reach out, include:

  • The dates of your stay and any events you'll be photographed at

  • Any filler or thread lift you've had, with the area and roughly when

  • Any acne, rash, or open wound on your face right now, and any facial surgery you're planning

How the device works is covered on our Ultherapy Prime page. If side effects are your main worry, a consultation is the place to see the plan for your own face before you decide. Beautystone is a clinic in Seoul's Hapjeong area.
