Oligio X is the newer-generation model of Oligio. Oligio is a monopolar radiofrequency (RF) device from the Korean manufacturer WONTECH that heats the deeper layers of your skin so the skin can tighten over time. Oligio X belongs to the same broad category as Thermage, but it's a different machine from a different company. It also isn't simply the original Oligio sold under a new name.

That's the short answer. The longer answer matters if you're planning a trip to Seoul and have seen Oligio X described as a Thermage alternative. You probably want to know three things: whether the difference is real, whether the treatment hurts or can burn, and whether a single visit on a short trip is worth it. In this article, we'll cover each of those in the order I go through them in the consultation room. We'll start with what the device does in the skin, then look at how it compares, what it feels like, when change shows up, and how it fits around a flight home.

What Is Oligio X, and Is It Just a Newer Oligio?

Oligio X is the newer model in the Oligio line. The model name doesn't tell you more than that. To see why the generation matters, it helps to know where the heat goes.

Your skin is built in layers. The thin outer layer that you wash and cover with sunscreen is the epidermis. Under it sits the dermis, the thicker layer that holds most of the collagen keeping your skin firm. "Monopolar" describes the path of the current. It enters through the treatment tip on your face and travels through the tissue to a grounding pad placed elsewhere on your body. Because of that path, heat can build up below the surface while the surface itself is being cooled.

When the deeper layer is warmed within a controlled range, the existing collagen tightens. Over the following months, the skin lays down new collagen. That's the whole idea behind this category. The treatment doesn't add volume or resurface the skin. Instead, it prompts your own tissue to rebuild.

So what's new in the X? WONTECH says the changes are in how the surface is cooled and how the energy is delivered: in divided pulses rather than one long burst. Those are the manufacturer's descriptions. I haven't found an independent published study on Oligio X itself, and the research I cite below was done on the original Oligio. I'd rather tell you that plainly than present the two models as interchangeable.

Is Oligio X the Same as Thermage?

No. Both are monopolar RF devices that heat the dermis to tighten skin. However, Thermage is made by Solta Medical and Oligio X is made by WONTECH, and the two devices use different handpieces, cooling methods and energy settings.

Being in the same category means the two devices share a goal and a basic mechanism. It doesn't mean the experience or the result is the same. How much energy reaches each depth, and how the surface is protected, depends on the device and on how it's set. I couldn't find a published study that compares the two devices directly, so I won't tell you one is stronger than the other. Anyone who confidently ranks them should be able to show you that comparison.

In practice, I don't start by choosing a brand. I start by looking at which areas have actually loosened and how thick your skin is. Then I lay out the options side by side:

• Mild-to-moderate loosening along the jaw and lower face: Monopolar RF is a reasonable fit, whether that's Oligio X or Thermage. Comfort and your schedule often decide between them.

• Surface pores or acne scars as the main concern: Deep heating isn't the right tool on its own. RF microneedling or another surface treatment fits better.

• Hollowness or lost volume: No heat device replaces volume. Fillers or collagen stimulators are a separate option.

Does Oligio X Hurt, and What Are the Risks?

It usually feels warm and prickly rather than sharp. How strong that feels depends on the area being treated and the energy level. Areas where bone sits close under thin skin often feel more intense than fuller areas such as the cheeks.

In a published study of the original Oligio for lower facial laxity in Asian patients, the average pain score was 3.13 out of 10, and no serious adverse events were observed.

That was one study's result under its own settings. It isn't a prediction for your session.

Now for the fear behind the question: will it burn me? Any device that heats skin carries some risk of a burn or blister. That's exactly why the surface cooling and the energy setting matter. Expected reactions include redness, warmth and mild swelling, and they should ease off rather than get worse. Contact the clinic, or seek medical care right away, if you notice any of these:

• Blisters or oozing

• Pain or heat that gets worse instead of better

• One spot that turns darker red or crusts over

• Fever, or redness that spreads

Before treatment, tell us if you're pregnant, have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, or have metal implants in the area being treated. In those situations, monopolar RF either isn't performed or needs a careful assessment first.

The other fear is that the treatment simply won't do anything, and that's fair. It's why I'm specific about who Oligio X suits. Deep RF won't fix surface texture, and it won't add volume. When it's matched to mild-to-moderate loosening, the research gives a reasonable picture of what to expect. That's what the next section covers.

When Do Oligio X Results Show?

You may feel some tightening early. The change you're actually paying for builds over months as collagen remodels, though. That's why it's judged at follow-up visits, not in the mirror that evening.

In the same study, all patients reported improvement in lower facial laxity immediately after treatment, with most patients having mild-to-moderate improvement over the 6-month follow-up.

The researchers also reported that continuous improvement was observed at the 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-ups.

Two cautions keep those findings in context. First, that study looked at the original Oligio, not Oligio X, and it focused on the lower face in Asian patients. Second, "mild-to-moderate" is the right expectation for this category. It's gradual tightening, not the kind of change surgery produces.

Here's how I'd read your situation. If you'll be in Seoul once and your main concern is mild-to-moderate loosening along the jaw and lower face, one session fits into one trip, and you'll judge the result at home over the following months. If you need a visible change before a fixed date, or your concern is mostly pores or volume, this isn't the treatment to fit into this trip.

Fitting Oligio X Into Your Travel Schedule in Seoul

If you didn't have sedation that day, there's no reason to delay your flight home because of the treatment. If sedation is used, that day is the exception, and we'd plan around it.

Sightseeing and photos are a separate question. Redness and warmth right after treatment are common, and how quickly they fade varies from person to person. If you have a photo shoot or an event on a set date, mention it at your consultation. That way, we can talk through the timing before you book the session.

Is one visit worth it? I think so, if Oligio X suits your concern. Some treatments, such as fillers, change your shape the same day. Most others, including RF tightening, gradually bring your skin back toward how it used to look instead of changing it all at once. With Oligio X, a single session is the treatment itself. Whether to repeat it, and when, is something we'd decide after you've seen how your skin responds over the following months.

• Expect warmth and prickling, and watch for blisters or pain that gets worse.

• Results are judged over months, and one session fits into a single trip.

Like any heat-based procedure, Oligio X comes with trade-offs. Ultimately, the choice depends on your skin, your goals and your schedule.

One detail most people never ask about is how the energy is spread across the face. In the Oligio study above, the protocol used an average number of shots of 412 ± 49, delivered in 3–4 passes with 15–30% overlap.

Those numbers aren't a target for you. They show that the result depends on how many passes go to each area. Along a loose jawline, I may add passes. Over thin skin close to bone, I hold back. At your consultation, ask which areas will get extra passes and why.
