How Ulthera Prime differs from original Ulthera

How Ulthera Prime differs from original Ulthera

How Ulthera Prime differs from original Ulthera

Same micro-focused ultrasound, different imaging and efficiency. A guide before your session.

When clients in our consultation room ask, "I'm here for Ulthera," and we let them know, "We will be proceeding with Prime today," many tilt their heads and ask, "Aren't they the same thing?" or "Is Prime a more expensive option?" Since they are devices under the same Ulthera brand, it is easy to get them confused, but the treatment process actually has slightly different aspects.

To get straight to the point, Prime is the successor model to the existing Ulthera device. It works by checking the depth with real-time visualization while delivering micro-focused ultrasound to the dermis and SMAS layers. While the main treatment benefits remain the same, improvements in visualization stability and operational efficiency have slightly reduced the time required per session and the burden on the skin. This article is informative content compiled by Beautystone Clinic.

Both share the same principle, but they belong to different generations of devices

Ulthera is a non-invasive lifting treatment that uses Micro-Focused Ultrasound (MFU)* to deliver thermal energy down to the SMAS layer inside the skin, stimulating the regeneration of collagen and elastin. Big changes are rarely visible immediately after the treatment; instead, the contour settles in as collagen regenerates over a period of 8 to 12 weeks.

Prime is the next generation of this Ulthera device. Although it uses the same micro-focused ultrasound, the visualization system and transducer efficiency have been improved. While the treatment principle and the onset of results are almost identical, the faster operation speed and clearer imaging allow for each shot to be delivered to a single spot with greater precision.

Micro-focused ultrasound (MFU)*: An ultrasound method that concentrates thermal energy by determining depth at microscopic point units. It passes through the surface and leaves thermal focal points only on tissues at the designated depth.

The treatment time tends to be a bit shorter

The original Ulthera used to take an average of 60 to 90 minutes. If you received treatment for the entire face and neck, times exceeding 90 minutes were quite common. With Prime, the image processing is faster and the transducer is more efficient, so even when delivering a similar number of shots to the same area, many clients find that their treatment time is reduced by about 10 to 20 minutes on average.

As treatment time decreases, the accumulated burden on the skin is also reduced. Some clients take short breaks during the procedure, and a shorter overall time allows the skin surface to cool down in between, making the subsequent lines much more comfortable. There is also a tendency to require less anesthesia assistance during the procedure.

The key difference is shooting while monitoring with real-time imaging

The most distinct advancement in Prime is the real-time imaging. Since the practitioner monitors the skin structure beneath the transducer on a screen to check the depth while administering the shots, they can tailor the lines by viewing each patient's unique SMAS depth and fat layer thickness during the session. The big picture of the final outcome is held much more clearly in the practitioner's hands.

While the original Ulthera also had an imaging guide feature, Prime boasts improved resolution and screen refresh rates. Even in the same patient, the area next to the cheekbones has more fat while the under-jaw area is thin; being able to fine-tune the depth while viewing these differences on the monitor greatly enhances the consistency of the results.

There is no significant difference in downtime or the timing of results

Prime is not a treatment where results "appear faster." The recovery process, where mild redness and subtle swelling subside within 24 to 72 hours, is very similar to the original Ulthera. The time when the contours become sharper as collagen settles in is also typically most visible between 8 and 12 weeks post-treatment.

The duration of the results is also quite similar. Many find that their results last about 12 to 18 months after a single session, making it natural to consider a touch-up treatment around the 18-month mark. Rather than trying to perfect your contours all at once with just the first session, satisfaction tends to be higher for those who keep the possibility of minor touch-ups open after seeing their initial results.

Whichever you choose under the Ulthera brand, the key lies in depth planning

As mentioned earlier, Prime is the next-generation model of the original Ulthera, not a completely different treatment. The core of both devices is their ability to deliver heat precisely to the SMAS layer, so the practitioner's design of depths and lines tailored to the patient's facial structure plays a much larger role in the final outcome.

If you look at photos together in the consultation room, mark your face's key anchor points (cheekbones, jawline, neck line), and plan which lines need reinforcement first, the experienced results will feel different even with the same number of shots. This article provides general information, and your specific skin condition and the appropriate number of treatment sessions should be determined by a doctor in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I have received the original Ulthera before, do I need to get Prime more frequently?

A. The treatment cycle varies from person to person. Since the time it takes for collagen to regenerate and the contours to settle is the same, many people observe an interval of 12 to 18 months. Receiving it more frequently does not mean the results accumulate indefinitely.

Q. Is there less pain with Prime?

A. Because the imaging is more precise, the number of shots delivered to the target area is stable, and some clients report feeling less discomfort. However, pain is a sensation that occurs when thermal energy reaches the SMAS layer, so it is difficult to eliminate completely. Using anesthesia support before the procedure will make it much more comfortable.

Q. What is the difference if I get treated at a clinic that does not explicitly display "Prime"?

A. Device generations differ even within the same Ulthera brand. It is safer to choose a place where they can directly show you the transducer and the visualization system in the consultation room. Confirming the available equipment beforehand will help you visualize your treatment flow.
