Brazilian Laser Hair Removal: Caution on Dark Skin
Brazilian areas have short hair cycles—6–8 sessions every 4–6 weeks, with energy tuned per visit.

Brazilian hair removal,
why exactly 6 to 8 sessions?
Last Wednesday,
a woman in her late 20s came into the exam room.
At another hospital, she had finished a 5-session package
but there was still hair left,
saying, “I was told 5 sessions would be enough—was I cheated?”
and she seemed upset.
To be honest, some people are done in 5 sessions.
But Brazilian hair removal is a different story.

This is, in fact,
why it’s different.
Brazilian hair removal refers to full hair removal inside the underwear line,
including the mons pubis, labia majora,
perineum, and around the anus.
Unlike the underarms or legs, this area has a shorter hair cycle
(the cycle of hair growth and shedding)
and a relatively high follicle density.
So even after the same six sessions, compared with other areas,
the noticeable effect tends to come later.

Why do some people
see less effect?
Because of the area’s characteristics, the hair cycle is short, so 6 to 8 sessions
at 4- to 6-week intervals are usually needed.
The key is to record the remaining hair amount and changes in hair texture each session
and adjust the energy accordingly.
Laser hair removal
works only on hairs in the anagen growth phase.
When there is enough melanin in the follicle,
the light energy is absorbed and
the follicle is destroyed—that’s the principle.
But in the Brazilian area,
the proportion in the growth phase is about 30%.
That means the hairs that can be targeted in one treatment
are less than one-third of the total.
So you wait 4 to 6 weeks for
the next batch of growth-phase hairs
and then treat again.
As the sessions go on, the hair becomes finer and
the color gets lighter, so you need to change the wavelength or
slightly increase the power,
and without that adjustment, the effect drops.
Dr. Wi Young-jin’s key takeaway
If Brazilian hair removal ends in 5 sessions, you’re lucky,
and 6 to 8 sessions is the reality in most cases.
More important than the number of sessions is whether the energy is adjusted each time
to match the condition of your hair.

This is how I
break it down in the exam room.
It varies by case,
but this is how I usually classify it.
Type | Expected sessions | Interval |
Plenty of hair and coarse | 7~8 sessions | 4 weeks |
Average hair volume and texture | Around 6 sessions | 5 weeks |
Fine and light | 5~6 sessions + maintenance | 6 weeks |
When hormonal influence is present | 8+ sessions + maintenance | 4 weeks |
When hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause, etc.) occur
dormant follicles wake up again.
So the phrase “permanent hair removal”
is not strictly correct.
But if you properly finish 6 to 8 sessions once,
then afterward even 1 or 2 maintenance sessions a year
are enough to keep things smooth.
Questions I hear
most often in the exam room
Q1. Can it be done during menstruation?
Brazilian hair removal is not recommended during menstruation.
There are hygiene reasons, and during that time the skin becomes more sensitive,
so the pain threshold is lower than usual.
Q2. Is paying per session better or is a package better?
To be honest, the per-session price is cheaper with a package.
However, for first-time visitors, I recommend trying 1 to 2 sessions first
and then paying for the remaining sessions after seeing the effect.
Q3. What if something comes out after the procedure or
reddens?
Redness immediately after the procedure is normal and
subsides within a few hours.
However, if it stings until the next day or develops tiny bumps,
it may be the early stage of folliculitis, so an ointment prescription may be needed.
Please avoid sauna, vigorous exercise,
and tight underwear on the day of the procedure.
That’s all from Wi Young-jin.
