Chin Filler Consult: Why Check Below Lips First?

Chin filler

You came in for a consultation,

why do we look at

the area under the lips first?

Let me give you the conclusion first.

If filler is placed only in the chin,

the side profile can actually look more awkward.

I'll explain why in this post.

Chin Filler Consult: Why Check Below Lips First?

They may look similar, but

the key point is elsewhere

Chin filler, literally,

adds volume to the chin point

to improve a recessed chin and a short chin.

But this is where many people misunderstand it,

the chin should be viewed as a 'plane,' not a 'point.'

Proper chin correction

must also include the hollow under the lips

and is something that has to be considered together.

Director Wi Young-jin's

key insight

The chin and the area under the lips are connected structures.

If filler is placed only in the chin, it looks unnatural,

and the hollow under the lips must also be corrected

to create a natural line from the side.

key insight

Last month, a client in their early 40s came in,

and they had received chin filler twice at another clinic.

The front view was fine, but from the side

the chin tip seemed to jut out.

The side profile line

the lower lip, the hollow under the lips, and the chin

these three points should connect in a smooth S-curve

for the profile to look natural.

So if I usually use 1.0 cc in the chin,

I place about 0.2 to 0.3 cc in the hollow area under the lips

in a shallow layer.

Director Wi Young-jin's key summary

Chin filler is not a procedure that looks only at the chin tip.

The side profile is much more important than the front,

and to improve the side line, the hollow under the lips

must be considered together to look natural.

Director Wi Young-jin's key summary

In my clinic, I

divide it like this

Type

Features

Approach

Recessed chin + deep under-lip hollow

Short chin and a pronounced hollow below the lips

Treat chin tip + under-lip area together

Only the chin tip is short

The under-lip area is flat; only the chin recedes

Focus on the chin tip, with under-lip support

Only under-lip hollow type

Chin length is fine, but the side line sinks in

Light correction only under the lips

Chin + severe wrinkle line

A deep groove from the corners of the mouth to the chin

Consider marionette lines as well

About 70% of the people who come for consultation

fall into the first type.

Many come back because after treating only the chin, the side profile looks awkward

so,

it's more cost-effective to assess both from the start.

If you've read this far,

you may be wondering this

Q1. If filler is placed under the lips, won't it look strange when smiling?

If a soft filler is placed very superficially

in a small amount, it won't look lumpy.

Usually I stop at around 0.2 to 0.3 cc.

Q2. How long does it last?

The chin usually lasts about 1 to 1.5 years,

while the under-lip area is affected by facial expressions

and lasts about 8 to 12 months.

Q3. Where are bruising and swelling worse?

The under-lip area may get mild bruising,

and the chin is in a deeper layer, so bruising is less common,

but swelling can last 2 to 3 days longer.

I hope today's post was helpful.

This has been Wi Young-jin.

Frequently asked questions

Q. If I get filler under my lips, won’t it look strange when I smile?

A. If you use a very small amount of the smooth formula and apply it very lightly, it won’t look caked.

Q. How long does it last?

A. The chin tip usually lasts about 1 to 1.5 years, and the area under the lips lasts about 8 to 12 months because it is affected by facial expressions.

Q. Where is the bruising or swelling more severe?

A. A slight bruise may form under the lips, and because the tip of the chin is a deeper layer, there is less bruising, but swelling may last 2–3 days longer.

Q. For chin fillers, is the front view or the side profile more important?

A. The side profile is actually much more important. For a natural-looking side view, the lower lip, the dip below the lip, and the tip of the chin should connect in a soft S-curve. If you only fill the tip of the chin, it can end up looking like it's awkwardly jutting out from the side.
