If you've noticed that the skin on your buttocks looks darker than the rest of you, maybe a little bumpy or rough too, you're not alone. It's one of those concerns people rarely bring up out loud, so most of us try to fix it quietly in the shower. The usual move is to grab a rough washcloth or a gritty scrub and go at it harder. Here's the catch: scrubbing can actually make the dark patches darker.

That's because buttock darkening usually comes from two everyday sources: friction from clothing and chairs, and the brown marks left behind after inflamed hair follicles (folliculitis) settle down. Rubbing the area just adds another round of friction. In this article, we'll cover the three main reasons the skin there darkens, why scrubbing backfires, how long fading realistically takes, and what a dermatologist checks before ever reaching for a laser.

What Causes Dark Skin on the Buttocks?

Most cases trace back to one of three paths, and each one calls for a different first step.

  • Friction and pressure: Tight clothing that rubs the same spot again and again, or long hours of sitting with your body weight pressing on one area, prompts the skin to make extra melanin as a kind of protective response.

  • Marks left by folliculitis: When an inflamed hair follicle heals, it often leaves a brown spot behind. That's called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH.

  • Acanthosis nigricans*: Skin in body folds gradually thickens and darkens. This one has a completely different cause from the first two.

*Acanthosis nigricans: a condition in which skin becomes thick, velvety and darker, most often in folds such as the armpits and groin.

How deep the pigment sits also shapes how long you'll be waiting. A dermatology review of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation explains that pigment in the epidermis can take months to years to resolve without treatment, while pigment that drops into the dermis may be permanent or take a very long time to fade. Think of it like a stain on fabric: a mark sitting on the surface lifts far more easily than one that has soaked into the fibers.

Three common causes of buttock darkening

Why Does Scrubbing Make It Darker?

Because the rubbing itself is a signal for the skin to make more pigment. Skin that turns brown from repeated friction alone even has a name: friction melanosis.

One published case report linked it to clothing repeatedly rubbing the skin over bony areas, and the treatment combined a 2% hydroquinone cream with simply wearing that clothing less often. It's a single patient, so it can't be generalized too far, but the takeaway is clear: cutting down the friction mattered as much as the cream.

Rough washcloths and grainy body scrubs work the same way. The skin may look brighter for a moment, but the irritation becomes a fresh cue to produce color. If you sit at a desk all day, you'll often see it first on the lower part of the buttocks that meets the chair. If you live in leggings or skinny jeans, it tends to show up along the seams.

A few small changes go a long way:

  • In the shower: Use your hands or a soft cloth to move the lather around, then pat the area dry instead of rubbing.

  • On sweaty days: Choose looser underwear and bottoms with seams that don't press into the skin.

  • At your desk: Stand up every so often to give the pressure points a break.

Scrubbing harder can make buttock darkening worse

Red Bumps First? Treat the Inflammation Before the Color

If you look closely and see red or yellowish dots centered on the hair follicles, deal with the folliculitis before you worry about the color. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that tight clothing tends to rub against the skin, and when it's hot and humid that constant rubbing can injure hair follicles and cause folliculitis. On those days, looser clothing is the simple fix it recommends.

While new bumps keep appearing, even a good brightening product can't keep up with the new marks forming underneath. The same review puts it plainly: managing PIH should begin with addressing the inflammation that caused it, and starting treatment early may help it resolve sooner. If you're not sure whether you're dealing with acne or folliculitis, our guide on telling acne and folliculitis apart walks through the differences.

How Long Does Buttock Hyperpigmentation Take to Fade?

Usually somewhere between several weeks and a year, depending on what you use and how deep the pigment sits. Even after the cause stops, color doesn't vanish overnight. According to the AAD, a spot that's a few shades darker than your natural skin tone will usually fade within 6 to 12 months, and prescription fading treatments from a dermatologist can help you see change sooner.

A 2026 systematic review reported that 4% hydroquinone, alone or in a combination formula, can produce significant improvement in as little as eight weeks. Every one of these timelines assumes the friction and inflammation have already stopped.

Situation

Typical time to fade

Prescription fading cream (faster cases)

About 8 weeks

Cause removed, fading on its own

About 6 to 12 months

Pigment that has reached the dermis

Much longer

Individual results vary, and everyone's skin is different. One practical tip: take a photo of the same area under the same lighting every couple of months. Side-by-side photos tell you far more accurately than a quick glance in the mirror whether things are actually getting lighter.

Side Effects and Risks: What to Rule Out Before Laser

If the darkening feels thick and velvety and follows the creases of the groin or the fold under the buttocks, acanthosis nigricans should come to mind first. DermNet explains that it's predominantly linked to insulin resistance, as seen with excess weight or diabetes, and that addressing the underlying cause, for example through weight loss, can lead it to improve or fully resolve. In that case, a blood sugar check comes before any laser.

Laser treatment for dark patches on the body calls for real caution. The same 2026 review notes that lasers such as Q-switched Nd:YAG have been reported for body PIH, but outcomes can be inconsistent and carry a risk of mottled pigmentation. That's why it shouldn't be the first step for most people.

Topical products have trade-offs too. Glycolic acid and retinoids can sting at first, and that usually settles as your skin adjusts. If redness, burning or peeling gets worse instead of better, stop using the product and contact your provider. And if a bump becomes painful, swollen and spreading, or you develop a fever, seek medical care right away.

At Beautystone, we start by examining the darkened area under good lighting to see whether the pigment is still in the upper layer of skin and whether any red inflammation is left. Only then do we decide whether topical care is enough or whether laser is worth adding. For a look at how lasers are matched to different types of pigment, see our comparison of lasers by pigment type.

What to Check Before Laser

The Bottom Line

  • Most buttock darkening comes from friction and marks left by folliculitis, so scrubbing harder can make it worse.

  • If red bumps are still appearing, calm the inflammation before you target the color.

  • Once the cause stops, spots a few shades darker than your skin usually fade within 6 to 12 months.

  • Thick, velvety darkening in skin folds deserves a blood sugar check before any talk of laser.

Like any treatment, fading options come with trade-offs, and laser on the body carries a real risk of uneven color. Ultimately, the choice depends on your skin, your goals and your budget.

If you're dealing with dark skin on your buttocks, a consultation is the best way to find out what fits you. Beautystone is a dermatology clinic in Seoul's Hapjeong area. When you reach out, a photo taken under consistent lighting, plus a note on when the darkening started and whether red bumps ever appeared there, helps us tell whether to begin with home care or an in-person exam.
