Pico Toning Effects,

How many sessions until melasma fades?

A 4-stage breakdown by session

These days, as temperatures go up and down,

summer will be here before we know it..

It's the season when concerns about UV rays start creeping in.

Around this time, there's one question

I hear especially often in the clinic.

"Doctor, after how many pico toning sessions

does melasma get lighter?"

Pico toning is now a fairly well-known,

popular procedure.

Even a quick search brings up tons of information,

and it's easy to find people around you

who've tried it at least once.

But just because it's commonly done

doesn't mean it works equally well for everyone.

And melasma doesn't automatically fade

just because the number of sessions increases.

Today, I'll talk honestly about this.

💡 Key Takeaways from Today's Post

Q. After how many pico toning sessions

can you see melasma improvement?

A. As early as 3–4 sessions for some, but for most people,

visible changes appear after 5–8 cumulative sessions.

Q. Is it effective for

all types of melasma?

A. No. Dermal melasma responds differently,

and requires a different approach.

Q. What's the right

interval between sessions?

A. Usually every 2–4 weeks is recommended,

but adjustments are needed depending on skin response.

How Pico Toning

Works on Melasma

열로 태우지 않고 소리로 깨뜨리는 '광음향 효과' — 피코토닝이 기미에 효과적인 진짜 이유

Pico toning uses ultra-short pulse lasers

in picosecond units at very low energy,

repeatedly delivered to the skin.

While conventional lasers destroy pigment with heat,

picosecond lasers use a photoacoustic effect

to break pigment into finer particles.

These finely fragmented pigment particles

can then be more easily absorbed and cleared

by our immune cells.

It doesn't disappear all at once;

it gradually lightens

as sessions accumulate.

How does your skin change

by session?

The claim that "your skin brightens after just one session"

is usually closer to an overall

increase in skin clarity than true melasma improvement.

For melasma itself to visibly lighten,

in my experience, it progresses in stages like this.

This is what I usually tell patients:

"Try not to be too impatient until about session 5."

However, if there are any signs of skin damage during that time,

please let me know right away.

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Wi Young-jin's Clinical Note:

Pico toning isn't always the best in every case.

For melasma located in the dermal layer,

pico toning alone has clear limitations.

For mixed-type melasma, even after dozens of pico toning sessions,

there were quite a few cases with low satisfaction.

In such cases, combining it with other lasers

is often more efficient.

Responses vary

by skin type

[자가 진단] 내 기미는 피코토닝만으로 될까? — 의사가 알려주는 기미 타입별 성공 확률

To be honest, even with the same melasma,

the energy settings should be adjusted differently

depending on skin type.

For those with thin, sensitive skin,

repeating sessions at very short intervals

can actually lead to more hyperpigmentation.

So just because there's little to no downtime

doesn't mean more frequent treatments are always the answer.

At the first visit, after a direct evaluation,

I individually adjust both energy settings and intervals.

Applying the same protocol to everyone

inevitably lowers treatment efficiency.

Treatment interval and aftercare,

these two determine the outcome

Sun protection

is just as important as the procedure itself in determining results.

Even if pigment is thoroughly fragmented, UV exposure

reactivates melanocytes.

A 2–4 week interval is usually recommended,

but if your skin is sensitive, we allow 4 or more weeks.

The downside is that the total treatment period gets longer ^^..

Still, going slowly

is often the fastest way in the end.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. After how many sessions does it noticeably lighten?

A. In my experience, those who respond faster see changes from 3–4 sessions,

while most notice improvement after 5–8 cumulative sessions.

Q2. How is it different from laser toning?

A. Pico toning has a much shorter pulse duration,

resulting in less thermal damage and higher pigment-fragmentation efficiency.

Q3. Can I wear makeup the next day?

A. Yes, washing your face on the same day and wearing makeup the next day are both fine.

Just make sure to apply sunscreen.

With GentleMax Pro Plus, using both wavelengths does not mean the results are the same.

We explain through clinical cases why GentleMax Pro Plus uses two wavelengths—755nm Alexandrite and 1064nm Nd:YAG—tailored to hair type and skin tone.

If it's still the same after 8 Brazilian hair removal sessions, check the difference between wavelength and cooling.

Hair Removal

When it comes to Brazilian hair removal, caution is needed for dark skin.

Because the Brazilian area has a short hair growth cycle, 6 to 8 sessions at 4 to 6 week intervals are generally recommended. Recording changes in hair density and texture at each session and adjusting the energy level is what determines the results.
