Armpit hyperpigmentation,

the claim that hair removal

makes it darker

is true

Hello,

I’m Wi Young-jin from Hongdae Beautystone Clinic.

Q. Even if I have armpit hyperpigmentation,

can I still get laser hair removal as usual?

A. If you fire a standard setting at dark skin,

the hyperpigmentation can

become even darker.

Energy adjustment is key.

Q. Is hyperpigmentation caused by hair removal,

or is it just because of my skin?

A. It’s both. Shaving or waxing irritation

builds up, and when bad laser treatment is

added, it creates a vicious cycle.

"For dark skin with armpit hyperpigmentation,

laser hair removal requires careful adjustment

of energy.

Beautystone provides a plan that combines

brightening care and hair removal."

What is armpit laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal (Laser Hair Removal) is

a procedure in which light at a specific

wavelength is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle,

turns into heat, and destroys the hair root.

Unlike regular IPL, which uses a broad

wavelength range, lasers such as diode or

Nd:YAG can precisely deliver a specific wavelength

to selectively target only the hair follicle.

That’s why, depending on skin type,

choosing the wavelength and energy

becomes much more important.

Dark armpits with hyperpigmentation,

why is the standard setting risky?

Let’s go a little deeper here.

You’ve probably heard that lasers target melanin.

But the tricky part is,

they don’t only target the melanin in the hair follicle,

but also the melanin on the skin surface,

which reacts at the same time.

Having armpit hyperpigmentation means that

melanin has already accumulated excessively

in the epidermis.

If you fire the laser with a standard setting

in this state, the epidermal melanin can absorb

too much heat and cause post-inflammatory

hyperpigmentation (PIH) to occur as an added problem.

Simply put, it’s like adding another layer

of black paint onto already dark skin.

So the key is not simply whether it’s a

'good machine.'

Even with the same device, the result depends on

whether energy, pulse width, and wavelength

are adjusted to match the skin tone.

Director Wi Young-jin’s key takeaway

Dark skin with armpit hyperpigmentation

should never be treated with laser energy

at full power.

As the epidermal melanin overheats,

it can backfire and make the pigment

darker.

By balancing wavelength, energy, and cooling,

and combining that with brightening care that

suppresses melanin production, you can remove

hair and brighten the skin tone at the same time.

Approach plan by skin type

Skin condition

Laser choice

Combined care

Slightly dull skin

Diode (energy adjusted)

Use whitening cream alongside

Clearly dark skin

Nd:YAG 1064nm

Laser toning + whitening agent

Thick keratin buildup + severe

Start after keratin care

Keratin care first

This is something many people misunderstand,

Nd:YAG 1064nm has the characteristic of passing

through the epidermis and reaching deeper into

the dermis, so it is less affected by the epidermis.

For darker skin types, it is a favorable choice

because it can target the hair follicle while

minimizing pigment irritation.

However, for people with hyperpigmentation,

reducing the risk of side effects comes first,

so it is still a practical option.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Should I get hair removal first,

or whitening care first?

It depends on the condition.

If hyperpigmentation is severe or the keratin

layer is thick, it is faster and safer to

start hair removal after care first.

If it’s an early-stage case, hair removal and

whitening care can be done together.

Q2. How many sessions do I need, and

how much does it cost?

Laser hair removal is usually planned as

6–8 sessions based on the hair growth cycle.

If the goal includes improving hyperpigmentation,

3–6 additional whitening sessions may be added.

Q3. I got darker after the laser.

Is it a side effect?

Temporary redness or a darker appearance

right after the procedure is a normal reaction,

but if it lasts more than two weeks, the settings

may not have been right.

In such cases, you must consult before the next

session and readjust the settings; you should

not just endure it and keep going.

That was Wi Young-jin.
