Eye Thermage Results: Is 1 Session Enough?

Eye Thermage results usually become clear at around 6 months. You may feel a light pull around your eyes on the day itself, but that's only the skin's first reaction to heat, and the rest builds slowly as the treated tissue heals. In this article, we'll cover what each stage looks like, what a single session achieved in eyelid studies, which side effects need a call, and when heavy hooding needs a different plan.

Quick summary

  • Judge eye Thermage at month 6, not in the first few weeks.

  • How much: In 72 people treated once, upper eyelids tightened in 88% and lower eyelids in 71% to 74% over 6 months.

  • Most people improved by up to about 25%; bigger changes showed up in a smaller group.

  • Next session: Decide from photos taken at month 6 in the same light and at the same angle.

Is the Tight Feeling Right After Eye Thermage the Whole Result?

Not quite. The pull you notice that day comes from collagen in the dermis tightening as soon as it's heated. Thermage uses radiofrequency (RF), a type of energy that creates heat inside the skin rather than on its surface.

*Dermis: the layer just under the skin's surface that holds collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm.*

So if that early tightness fades, it doesn't mean the treatment stopped working. The heated area keeps healing for months and lays down new collagen as it does, and a second, slower round of tightening follows over that healing period.

The skin around your eyes is some of the thinnest on your face. That's why the gradual change tends to show up in two places you can actually see: how heavily the upper lid folds down, and the fine lines at the outer corners.

How Many Months Until the Eyelid Changes Show?

How Many Months Until the Eyelid Changes Show?

Use month 6 as your checkpoint. In a study that treated the eyelids of 72 people once and followed them for 6 months, upper eyelid tightening was seen in 88% and reduced hooding in 86%. Lower eyelids tightened in 71% to 74% of people.

*Hooding: upper eyelid skin that drapes down over the eyelid crease.*

The size of the change wasn't the same for everyone. Most people improved by up to about 25%, and only a smaller share saw more dramatic results. It's still unclear what sets the big responders apart from everyone else. How much you see depends on your skin.

Keep in mind that this trial used a small 0.25cm² eyelid tip back in 2006, so it was done on an earlier generation of the device than the one used today. Those percentages are a reasonable guide to the timeline, not a promise of the same numbers.

Is 1 Eye Thermage Session Enough?

Is 1 Eye Thermage Session Enough?

For most of the published data, 1 session is all that was tested. When 86 people had a single treatment around the eyes, reviewers looking at blinded photos found wrinkles improved by at least one grade in 83.2% of treated areas at 6 months. Eyebrows rose by 0.5mm or more in 61.5% of the cases measured.

That said, only half of the patients (50%) reported being satisfied with how much their wrinkles softened. The treating doctors, looking without the before photos, noted improvement in just 28.9% of areas. So a change a camera can pick up may feel smaller when you look in the mirror, and it helps to know that before you book.

That's why the call on a second session belongs at month 6. At 1 or 3 months, the heated tissue is still healing, so a photo from then can make a single session look weaker than it will end up. Results differ from person to person, and if the month-6 photo still shows only a small change, that's the point to talk through other options with your provider.

Eye Thermage Side Effects: What Passes and What Needs a Call

Eye Thermage Side Effects: What Passes and What Needs a Call

Because eyelid skin is thin, heat that collects in one spot can cause a burn. Second-degree burns are rare: they showed up in 21 of 5,858 pulses (0.36%) across 86 eye-area patients, and 3 of those people still had small scars at 6 months. Redness and swelling, on the other hand, were uncommon and didn't last long.

What usually settles on its own

  • A tight feeling around the eyes on the day of treatment

  • Slight redness or light puffiness around the lids that calms down by itself

When to contact the clinic right away

  • A blister forms on a treated spot

  • The skin oozes, or a crust forms

  • Your eye hurts, or your vision turns blurry

  • Redness and pain get worse from one day to the next

If you notice any of these, contact the clinic that treated you right away and get examined. Blurry vision shouldn't wait: get same-day care. Never pop a blister, and don't cover it with makeup. If you've already flown home, see a local doctor rather than waiting for a message back.

How Much Can Eye Thermage Do for Heavy Hooding?

How Much Can Eye Thermage Do for Heavy Hooding?

If your upper lids droop far enough to cover part of your pupil, expect only a modest change from eye Thermage. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that a surgical lift, such as eyelid surgery, gives the most dramatic results among the options for loose skin. For early laxity, where the skin has thinned and fine lines have multiplied but the lid still sits clear of the pupil, tightening with RF may be a reasonable fit.

At Beautystone, the doctor first looks at how far each lid folds down and how the two eyes differ from each other, then decides whether eye Thermage makes sense for you at all. If one side hangs noticeably lower, that difference is part of the conversation before anything is booked.

Fortunately, you don't have to guess which group you're in. A quick check in the mirror gives you a starting point: look straight ahead with relaxed brows and see whether the fold of your upper lid touches your lashes or reaches the pupil.

Heavy hooding? Ask about surgery

How Should You Track Your Results Between Visits?

Photos are the most reliable way to see a change that builds this slowly. Take one before treatment and another at month 6, using the same light, the same angle, and your eyes open with your brows relaxed.

When you set the two side by side, compare three things:

  • How much of the upper lid crease is visible

  • Where your eyebrows sit relative to your eyes

  • The fine lines at the outer corners when you aren't smiling

These are the same changes the eyelid studies measured, so they're the ones most likely to move. Photos at 1 or 3 months are still worth taking as a record. Just don't make the decision about another session from them.

In fact, a phone photo near a window, taken at the same time of day, is usually enough. Overhead bathroom lighting can deepen shadows under the brow and make the lids look heavier than they are.

The Bottom Line: Judge Eye Thermage at Month 6

Like any procedure, eye Thermage comes with trade-offs, and the right choice depends on how far your lids have dropped and what you're hoping to change. Before you decide, ask whether your laxity is the early kind that RF can reach or whether surgery belongs on the table. That one answer narrows your options quickly.

Beautystone is a clinic in Seoul's Hapjeong area. When you reach out, include when you first noticed the drooping, any lifting treatments you've had before, and a front-facing photo with your eyes open. If you've already had eye Thermage, add your before photo and the month you were treated.
