Skin Botox Downtime: What's Normal by Day 7?

Skin Botox downtime is usually just the day itself, and makeup is fine right away. A bruise can last about a week, so plan big events with care. Here's why.

Skin Botox downtime is usually just the day of treatment, so going back to work the next day is generally fine. The stinging fades within about 30 minutes, and you can put on makeup right away as long as you don't rub it in. The one thing that can linger is a bruise: if you get one, it lasts about 1 week, so keep big photo days at least a week away.

The small bumps you see right after treatment look alarming but are part of how the technique works. Below, we'll walk through what shows up on the day, when work, makeup, and workouts are fine, how long bruises and a stiff smile can last, and which signs need care right away.

Quick summary

  • Skin Botox downtime is usually limited to the day itself, so most people can work the next day.

  • Planning rule: a bruise lasts about 1 week, so leave a week before important events.

  • Wait 2 hours before sweaty workouts, and don't rub or massage the treated spots.

  • A slightly uneven smile usually eases within 2 to 3 weeks, but trouble swallowing or breathing needs care right away.

What Does Skin Botox Leave on Your Face the Same Day?

Skin Botox leaves a small raised bump at each injection point. The toxin is diluted and placed in tiny amounts, many times over, into the dermis (the skin layer just under the surface), and each drop lifts a little bump called a bleb. Those bumps are actually a sign the drops went in at the intended depth. Around them you may also see redness, mild swelling, and some soreness.

In a split-face study of 18 Korean volunteers, toxin went into the dermis of one cheek. Pain and stinging during the injections were the most common reactions, and they settled within 30 minutes for everyone. Keeping the drops shallow and small is meant to stop the toxin from reaching the muscle below, which is why skin Botox leaves visible marks that regular Botox usually doesn't.

In the US, toxins such as Xeomin are FDA-approved for specific uses, such as frown lines, as injections into muscle. Spreading tiny amounts through the skin layer, the way skin Botox does, is an off-label use.

Skin Botox Downtime: When Can You Go Back to Work and Wear Makeup?

You can go back to work and wear makeup on the same day. Most people return to everyday activities as soon as they leave the treatment room*. When you apply makeup, lay it on gently instead of pressing or rubbing it in.

*Based on American Academy of Dermatology guidance on botulinum toxin.

Not rubbing or massaging the treated spots keeps the toxin from drifting into muscles you don't want affected. For the same reason, hold off for 2 hours on lifting heavy things, working out, or anything else that gets your heart rate up.

How Long Do Skin Botox Bruises and a Stiff Smile Last?

A bruise comes from the needle itself, and if one appears, it lasts about 1 week. Blood thinners such as aspirin, warfarin, or dabigatran raise the chance of bruising, so mention them before treatment.

If the toxin goes deeper than the dermis, or too much lands in one spot, the muscle underneath can weaken. You might notice one corner of your mouth not lifting fully when you smile, or your brows feeling heavy. Because the toxin is diluted, this is usually temporary and eases within 2 to 3 weeks. In the 18-person study, one volunteer who received 30 units in one cheek had one-sided facial weakness that improved a month later, and nobody given 20 units or less had this problem.

Dose and depth depend on how your facial muscles are built, so before injecting I watch how both sides of your face move when you smile and talk. If your expressions already lean to one side, noting that at the consultation makes it easier to tell what's new afterward. Changes in oil and pores come after the downtime, and our skin Botox results timeline covers that part.

Short checklist of warning signs after an injection, such as trouble swallowing or blurry vision

Skin Botox Side Effects: What Passes and When to Get Help

Redness, swelling, soreness, and bruising are mild reactions that pass, and a stiff smile usually eases within 2 to 3 weeks. The signs below are different: don't wait them out, get medical care right away*.

*Based on the US FDA label for Xeomin.

  • Trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing

  • Double or blurry vision, or drooping eyelids

  • Weakness spreading through your body

  • Itching or a rash together with wheezing, dizziness, or feeling faint

These symptoms can appear anywhere from hours to weeks after injection. They're very rare, but swallowing and breathing problems can be life-threatening, so if you're short of breath, go to the nearest emergency room.

It's better to hold off on skin Botox if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if the skin to be treated is infected, or if you've had an allergy to botulinum toxin. Conditions that weaken muscles, such as myasthenia gravis, also need to be mentioned before treatment.

Traveler checking event dates on a phone before a flight home from Seoul

Skin Botox on a Trip to Seoul: Flights, Bruises, and Timing

Unless you had sedation that day, there's no need to postpone your flight because of skin Botox. The bumps settle quickly, so the part to plan around on a trip is the chance of a bruise that lasts about a week.

It also helps to know what one visit can do. Some treatments, like fillers, change your shape the same day. Skin Botox works gradually instead, so the oil and pore changes you're hoping for are something you'll judge weeks later, most likely after you're home.

Once you're home, you can send photos through the consultation button on this page if something concerns you. If you have trouble swallowing or breathing, vision changes, or spreading weakness, go to a local emergency room first rather than waiting for a reply.

Fly as planned, plan for bruises

The Bottom Line: Count Back From Your Big Day

If you have an event coming up, count backward from the date. Allow about 1 week for a possible bruise and 2 to 3 weeks for a stiff smile to ease, so skin Botox about 3 weeks before an important photo day leaves you room.

Before you decide, ask: which areas would you treat on my face, and how shallow and spread out would the drops be? That one answer tells you most of what to expect from the downtime. Beautystone is a clinic in Seoul's Hapjeong area. When you reach out, include any medications you take, the date of your next big event, and the concern you'd like to target, such as pores, oil, or fine lines.
