A sunken side cheek usually needs 3 rounds of Juvelook Volume, not one. In the main study on this area, people had 3 sessions spaced 3 weeks apart, and results were judged 3 months after the last one. That's because Juvelook Volume is spread thin into the fat just under the skin and builds up gradually, rather than adding volume on the day.
The area below the cheekbone is held tight by small ligaments, so packing product into one spot there can leave the contour lumpy. Below, we'll walk through how a side cheek hollow differs from a front cheek hollow, how many sessions it takes, how the products compare, and which reactions mean you should call a doctor.
Quick summary
For a sunken side cheek, Juvelook Volume is diluted and fanned thinly into the superficial fat, then judged after a full series.
In a 24-person study, sessions were 3 weeks apart, 3 in total, with results checked 3 months after the last one.
23 of those 24 people were rated as improved, and 1 showed no change.
Bruising showed up in 3 of 24 people and cleared within 10 days.
Is a Sunken Side Cheek Different From a Hollow Front Cheek?
A sunken side cheek is the dip that forms below the outer cheekbone, along the bony ridge that runs from in front of the ear toward the cheek. It tends to show up with age as the tissue under the skin shifts position and the ligaments that hold it in place loosen. Weight loss can make it look sharper, too.

A hollow under the eye or beside the nose is a different spot with a different plan. One anatomy review splits cheek hollows into three zones (the front cheek near the nose, the lower cheek near the mouth, and the side cheek below the cheekbone) and targets a different tissue layer and cannula path in each. So before anything is injected, the doctor looks at the balance of your whole face, including any difference between your left and right sides, and decides how much of the side cheek actually needs treatment.
Juvelook Volume isn't FDA-approved in the US. In Korea, it's authorized by the MFDS (Korea's drug and medical device regulator) as a medical device for temporarily improving facial wrinkles. It's a mix of tiny PDLLA particles and hyaluronic acid.
*PDLLA (poly-D,L-lactic acid): a particle material that breaks down slowly in the body.

Why Is Juvelook Volume Spread Thin Instead of Filled All at Once?
A tight ligament border makes it hard to fill the side cheek smoothly in one go. Researchers who studied this area pointed out that a regular hyaluronic acid filler packed into the hollow can leave the edges uneven or give an ‘overfilled’ look.
So in their 24-person study, each vial of Juvelook Volume was mixed with 8 mL of saline to make it very thin. Each side got 4 mL per session. A 25-gauge cannula went in through a single entry point just below the cheekbone ligament, and the product was fanned out in three directions inside the superficial fat layer.
*Cannula: a thin tube with a blunt tip that pushes tissue aside instead of piercing it the way a sharp needle does.
That's why the first session won't look dramatic. The idea is gradual change from the skin's own response over several weeks, not instant volume. If you need visible volume by a certain date, that's worth raising before you start.

How Many Juvelook Volume Sessions Before You See Results?
In the side cheek study, everyone had 3 sessions 3 weeks apart, and the result was judged 3 months after the final session. Counting from the first visit, that's 3 sessions over about 6 weeks and then a 3-month wait. One session won't change what you see in the mirror by much.
At the 3-month check, doctors rated 7 people (29.2%) as very much improved, 11 (45.8%) as much improved, 5 (20.8%) as improved, and 1 (4.2%) as unchanged. In all, 23 of the 24 were rated as improved to some degree, and 21 people (87.5%) said they were satisfied or very satisfied. Keep in mind this was a case series of 24 people with no comparison group, and the change was rated by eye rather than measured. Results differ from person to person.
If you're comparing quotes or plans, these four numbers are what make them comparable:
What to check | Value in the side cheek study | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
Layer | Superficial fat | Which layer will it go into on my side cheek? |
Dilution | 8 mL of saline per vial | How much is each vial diluted? |
Amount per side | 4 mL | How much goes into each side? |
Sessions | 3, spaced 3 weeks apart | How many sessions, and how far apart? |
If two plans differ in these values, they're not really the same treatment, and the time to judge the result can differ, too.

Juvelook vs. Juvelook Volume vs. HA Filler: Which Fits a Side Cheek?
It comes down to whether you need volume on the day or can wait for a gradual change. Juvelook and Juvelook Volume share the same ingredients, but the particle size differs, and that changes where each one fits.
Juvelook | Juvelook Volume | HA filler | |
|---|---|---|---|
Particle size | 20 to 30 μm | 40 to 60 μm | Gel, no particles |
Where it was used in the studies cited here | Into the skin of the nasolabial folds | Superficial fat of the side cheek | Not studied in the side cheek here |
How change shows up | Gradually, over sessions | Gradually, over sessions | On the day |
Side cheek concern | Not the product used for this area | The product used in the side cheek study | Edges can look uneven next to tight ligaments |
Particle size matters most where the skin is thin. In one case report, Juvelook Volume placed in the under-eye hollow led to firm bumps, and the authors put it down to using the larger-particle product in the wrong area. If your front cheek is hollow as well, our guide to Juvelook Volume vs. filler for hollow cheeks covers how that area is decided.

Juvelook Volume Side Effects: What Fades and What Needs a Doctor?
Bruising is the reaction you're most likely to see. In the side cheek study, 3 of 24 people (12.5%) bruised, and it cleared within 10 days. No one had bumps, infection, granulomas, or blood vessel problems during the 3 months of follow-up.
Firm bumps have been reported in other areas. In one 42-year-old woman treated under the eyes, firm lumps showed up 3 weeks later with no redness or tenderness, and they were treated with a radiofrequency device. If a lump grows, turns red or painful, or feels warm, have it checked.
Get medical care right away, without waiting to see if it settles, if you notice any of these*:
*Based on US FDA guidance for injectable dermal fillers.
Skin near the injection site turning white, gray, or blue
Unusual pain
Vision changes (go to the nearest emergency room)
Sudden difficulty speaking, numbness or weakness in your face, arms, or legs, difficulty walking, face drooping, severe headache, dizziness, or confusion (go to the nearest emergency room)
These signs can appear during the injection or shortly after it. Vision loss from Juvelook Volume accidentally entering a blood vessel is rare, but it's serious enough that a group of experts published a consensus on safe injection technique and on what to do if it happens.
It's better to hold off on treatment in these cases:
The skin you'd be treating is inflamed or infected (wait until it heals)
You have a bleeding disorder
You have severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis
You're allergic to a local anesthetic such as lidocaine

Juvelook Volume on a Trip to Seoul: Sessions and Flights
Unless you had sedation that day, there's no need to push back your flight because of a Juvelook Volume session. Bruising, if it shows up, can take up to about 10 days to clear, so it may still be visible on your way home.
One visit means one step, not the full plan. Some treatments, like fillers, change your shape the same day. Juvelook Volume works the other way: the change tends to come gradually, over a series of sessions. With sessions 3 weeks apart, a single short trip usually covers one of them, so it helps to plan your return visits before you book.
Once you're home, you can send photos through the consultation button on this page if something concerns you. If you notice skin color changes, unusual pain, or changes in your vision, see a local doctor or emergency room first rather than waiting for a reply.
The Bottom Line: Ask About the Layer and the Amount Per Side
The single most useful question for a side cheek is how thin the product will be spread: which layer it goes into, and how many mL per side. Two plans that both say ‘Juvelook Volume’ can be quite different treatments once those values are written down.
Before you decide, ask: for my side cheek, which layer, how many mL per side, and how many weeks between sessions? Like any procedure, it comes with trade-offs, and the right choice depends on whether you need volume by a set date or can wait for a gradual change.
