Calculating Tattoo Removal Costs:
Multiplying by the 'Total Sessions' rather than the unit cost per cm
reveals the true price.

The excitement of getting a tattoo lasts for 10 minutes,
but the regret can last for 10 years.
Especially at this time of year when sleeves get shorter,
that regret becomes exceptionally clear.
If you've been putting it off because you're worried,
'I heard it costs more to remove it' or 'What if it leaves a scar?'
today, I will share the realistic costs
and process of tattoo removal
without holding anything back.
Let's focus on how much the total cost is,
rather than just the price per single session.
Q. Is tattoo removal cost
determined solely by size?
No. The colors, ink depth, and the number of sessions required
are all factored in.
I will explain these variables below.
Q. Can a tattoo be removed
in just one session?
No. In most cases, multiple sessions are required,
and that significantly changes the total cost.
I'll cover this in detail in the main text as well.
Q. Does the price vary
depending on the tattoo colors?
Yes. Colored tattoos have a higher level of difficulty
compared to black tattoos,
and because different equipment is required,
the cost structure itself is completely different.
3 Variables That Determine the Cost

When you search for tattoo removal costs,
you'll see many tables showing "price per cm,"
but this is a bit misleading because
size alone cannot explain the whole picture.
I usually categorize it like this:
Size
Calculated based on area, which is the most basic variable.
Color
Black & Grey vs. Colors (Red, Blue, Yellow, etc.)
Expected Number of Sessions
Varies depending on ink density, skin depth, and the age of the tattoo.
The total cost is calculated by multiplying these three factors together.
Single Session Price vs. Total Cost:
Why Are They So Different?

This is a point where many people get confused.
Advertised prices like "$30 per session"
are based on a very small, single-color tattoo.
But there is one important thing here.
Almost without exception, tattoo removal
requires multiple sessions.
Because the ink is embedded deep in the dermis layer of the skin,
it cannot be completely broken down with just a single laser treatment.
Your immune cells need time to clear away the shattered ink,
and the tattoo gradually fades as this process is repeated.
In my experience, small, single-color black tattoos usually take 5 to 8 sessions,
while cases with lots of colors or large areas
often require more than 10 sessions.
So, even if the price per session seems inexpensive,
when you calculate the total cost,
it can sometimes turn out to be more than you expected.
To be completely honest,
I've seen quite a few people who start because it's "cheap"
but end up getting exhausted or giving up halfway through.
This is why it's so important to make a plan
based on the total cost before you begin.
Dr. Wi Young-jin's Practice Note:
In my experience, colored tattoos require different laser wavelengths
depending on the color, so
it's often impossible to resolve everything with just a single device.
For example, bright yellow or light green tones
have a weak response to general Nd:YAG lasers,
requiring picosecond-range laser equipment or
devices that support multiple wavelengths.
I always discuss this beforehand, but
clinics that only have single-wavelength equipment
may have limitations in removing colored tattoos.
So, it's a good idea to check what equipment they use before your consultation.
Approximate Cost Range by Size

Since many people want specific figures,
I will outline them based on the cases I typically treat.
(Please note that this varies by clinic,
and the below is an approximate range based on Seoul clinics.)
Tattoo Size | Color | Cost per Session Range | Expected Sessions | Total Cost Range (Approx.) |
Small (Under 3cm) | Black | 30,000 ~ 80,000 KRW | 5 ~ 8 times | 150,000 ~ 600,000 KRW |
Medium (5~10cm) | Black | 80,000 ~ 200,000 KRW | 6 ~ 10 times | 500,000 ~ 2,000,000 KRW |
Medium (5~10cm) | Colored | 150,000 ~ 300,000 KRW | 8 ~ 12 times | 1,200,000 ~ 3,600,000 KRW |
Large (Over 15cm) | Mixed | From 300,000 KRW ~ | 10+ times | Can exceed 3,000,000 KRW |
While it's a bit tricky because
some places sell packages
and others charge per session,
making a direct comparison can be difficult.
Still, it is best to make your decision after
looking at the total cost range first.
30-Second Self-Estimate for My Tattoo
It can be hard to get a feel for it just by looking at a table.
So, I've broken it down into 3 steps
so you can easily apply it to your own tattoo.
Step 1. Measure the Size
If you don't have a ruler, use a credit card.
The width of a card is about 8.6cm.
If it's half a card, consider it small; if it's the size of the card, it's medium;
and if it goes well beyond the card, it's large.
Step 2. Identify the Colors
If it's only black and grey, look at the black row in the table above.
If there's even a little bit of red, yellow, or green mixed in,
look at the color row.
Both the number of sessions and the unit price will increase.
Step 3. Single-Session Cost × Expected Sessions
This is the true cost of removing your tattoo.
Let me give you an example.
For a 4cm black lettering tattoo on the wrist:
30,000~80,000 KRW per session × 5~8 sessions,
which comes to roughly 150,000~500,000 KRW.
For a 10cm colored tattoo on the shoulder:
150,000~300,000 KRW per session × 8~12 sessions,
which translates to over 1,200,000 KRW.
If calculating is too tedious or unclear,
please send over a photo of your tattoo.
I will take a look and estimate it for you directly.
Key Summary:
Tattoo removal costs should be viewed as a total sum
multiplied by size, color, and sessions, rather than a single session price.
What's More Important Than Cost
— Ultimately, the Quality of the Results
However, choosing the cheapest place
isn't always the best approach.
The most common issue in tattoo removal is
unnecessarily increasing the number of sessions
by using energy levels that are too low or intervals that are too tight.
Conversely, using settings that are too strong
carries a risk of hyperpigmentation (PIH) or scarring.
Indeed...
Even for the exact same tattoo, the outcome varies widely based on the practitioner's
experience in adjusting energy settings. This is the reality of tattoo removal.
How Beautystone Estimates Your Cost
I briefly mentioned equipment above,
so let me honestly share our clinical standards.
We match wavelengths by color using PicoWay
We utilize the picosecond laser, PicoWay.
Unlike single-wavelength devices,
we can adjust the wavelength to match specific colors,
allowing us to create an accurate session path even for colored tattoos.
We quote the total cost before beginning treatment
I do not personally like the structure
where you start with a low single-session price only to have sessions accumulate endlessly.
We guide you through the expected sessions and total cost first,
and if there's any deviation, we explain the reasons detail by detail.
The Director customizes the energy parameters directly
Settings that are too low only increase sessions,
while overly aggressive settings leave scars; it all comes down to parameter tuning.
Because of this, I personally assess the skin's reaction during every single session and adjust the parameters accordingly.
If you are near Hapjeong or Hongdae,
or if you can travel from the Shinchon or Ewha Womans Univ. area,
sending a photo of your tattoo via WhatsApp first
will allow us to provide you with
an approximate number of sessions and a cost range in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. How many sessions are required
to completely remove a tattoo?
A. In my experience, small black tattoos take 5~8 sessions,
while colored or larger tattoos
often require 10 sessions or more.
Q2. Can tattoo removal
leave a scar?
A. If energy levels are set too high
or treatments are repeated without proper intervals, there is a risk of scarring or hyperpigmentation.
This is why the practitioner's setting experience is so critical.
Q3. Can semi-permanent eyebrows or eyeliner
also be removed with lasers?
A. Yes, they can be removed. However, the eye area
requires protective shields,
and responses can vary depending on the type of pigment used.
Q4. Can I transfer my treatment
from another clinic?
A. Yes, absolutely. If you let us know the number of sessions you've had
and the device used,
we can design the remaining session plan accordingly.
I highly recommend confirming the total expected cost range and session path
before making your final decision.
