Tattoo removal: Why searching for "the cheapest place" only damages your skin and wastes your money
Tattoo removal cost,
how much does it actually cost?

"I heard others got it removed in just 5 sessions,
so why is mine still the same?"
People who come to Beautystone
after receiving multiple treatments elsewhere
without results
often say this in common.
Tattoo removal cost is not simply
determined only by 'size'.
The type of color, the depth of the ink,
and above all, the practitioner's
'energy design'
can make the total number of sessions and cost vary widely.
To make sure the removal cost is worth it,
what should you check,
I’ll break it down from a practicing doctor’s perspective.
Let me first answer
the three most frequently asked questions.
Q. Is tattoo removal cost
determined only by size?
No.
Besides size, color, ink type,
and tattoo location also affect it.
I’ll explain in detail below.
Q. Can it be removed all at once?
No. Usually, multiple sessions are needed.
When calculating total cost,
this is the most important part,
which I’ll cover in the main text.
Q. Are color tattoos
much more expensive than black-and-gray?
Yes. Because the laser wavelengths used
are different, there is a cost difference.
I’ll explain this specifically later as well.
Tattoo removal cost,
what is it based on?

Tattoo removal cost is largely determined by four factors.
1. Size
This is the most basic criterion.
It is usually divided by cm² units or palm-size 기준.
There is a big range, from small tattoos about one finger joint
to large tattoos covering the entire back.
2. Color (black-and-gray vs. color)
For black-and-gray, an Nd:YAG laser
covers most cases with one type.
On the other hand, for color tattoos,
each color responds to different wavelengths,
so a laser supporting multiple wavelengths is needed.
This is why the cost goes up.
3. Ink depth and density
Ink placed by professional tattooists
is often embedded deep into the dermis.
Even at the same size, higher ink density
means more sessions are needed.
4. Location
Areas with poor blood circulation, like fingers and ankles,
have lower removal efficiency even with the same energy.
If removal is slower, total cost naturally increases.
I’ll summarize it in the table below.
Criterion | Impact on cost | Notes |
Size (small, 2–3cm²) | Relatively low | Starts from tens of thousands KRW per session |
Size (large, palm-size or bigger) | High | Can reach hundreds of thousands KRW per session |
Black-and-gray tattoo | Base cost | Handled with a single-wavelength laser |
Color tattoo | Higher than black-and-gray | Requires multi-wavelength laser |
Areas with poor circulation | Higher total cost due to increased session count | Fingers, ankles, top of foot, etc. |
Not once, but multiple times—
you need to look at total cost

This part can be a bit tricky, because in clinic ads,
many people compare only the line that says
"X won per session."
But there is one key point here.
Tattoo removal usually does not end in one session.
In my experience, even small black-and-gray tattoos need at least 5–8 sessions,
and large tattoos or those mixed with color
often require 10 or more sessions.
So even if the per-session price looks cheap,
the total cost may end up being higher.
When comparing, you should always
calculate by "estimated total sessions × per-session cost."
.
And the interval between sessions is also important.
Usually, sessions are spaced 4–8 weeks apart,
and during this period the body processes
ink particles broken down by the laser through the immune system.
If intervals are too short, treatment is done before skin recovery is complete,
so
efficiency drops and side-effect risk rises.
To be honest, wanting to remove it quickly,
some people ignore intervals,
but that can actually
increase the total number of sessions needed.
Director Wi Young-jin’s clinical note:
Some people come in saying they had multiple tattoo removal sessions
at other clinics but saw no effect.
When we check, the interval was often too short,
or the energy setting was too low.
Especially for tattoos with dense ink,
energy needs to be raised sufficiently,
but if it is kept low due to pain,
the effect inevitably decreases.
I always explain this in advance as well.
To remove it properly,
you need to tolerate a certain level of pain.
It really hurts a lot.
Even with numbing cream, you still feel some of it.
Color tattoos,
why are they more expensive and take longer?

It’s a bit technical, but let me explain briefly.
Lasers emit light at specific wavelengths,
and each ink color responds best to different wavelengths.
For example, black and dark blue tones
respond well to 1064nm,
red and orange tones to 532nm,
and sky blue and green tones
require yet another wavelength.
In other words, for color tattoos with multiple pigments,
you have to split treatment
using different wavelengths by color,
so treatment time gets longer and cost goes up.
But this isn’t just about being expensive.
If the proper wavelength is not used,
the ink won’t respond,
so no matter how many sessions you get, results may be poor.
That’s why equipment selection is crucial
for removing color tattoos.
Key summary
Color tattoos require
different laser wavelengths by color, so
cost and session count increase compared with black-and-gray tattoos.
Trying to save money,
but ending up spending more

This is a common misunderstanding:
for tattoo removal, "let’s just go somewhere cheap first"
often does not work well.
If you receive many sessions
with low energy settings,
the ink may not be fully shattered,
and skin reactions can actually make removal
more difficult in some cases.
There’s one more thing I must mention:
in laser tattoo removal, the practitioner’s judgment of energy settings
directly affects the outcome.
Even with the same device,
efficiency differs depending on how it is set.
It varies by case, but
this is how I usually approach it.
At the first consultation, after checking ink thickness,
color composition, and skin type,
I first establish a session plan before starting.
That way, from the beginning,
we can proceed efficiently with appropriate energy.
The downside is the cost ^^..
Honestly, tattoo removal
is not a treatment that ends cheaply in a short time.
Still, if done with a proper plan,
you can ultimately save both total cost and total time.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. How much does one
tattoo removal session cost?
A. It varies by size and color,
but for small black-and-gray tattoos, it starts from tens of thousands KRW,
while large color tattoos
can exceed hundreds of thousands KRW per session.
Rather than only per-session cost,
you should also check the estimated total sessions
to compare actual costs accurately.
Q2. About how many sessions
are needed to completely remove a tattoo?
A. In my experience, small black-and-gray tattoos take 5–8 sessions,
while large tattoos or those mixed with color
often require 10 or more sessions.
Because it varies depending on ink depth,
color composition, and blood circulation at the treatment area,
an in-person consultation is the most accurate way to confirm.
Q3. What happens if you
just stop in the middle of tattoo removal?
A. The ink remains only partially broken down.
It stays in the skin without being fully removed,
so when you resume treatment later,
it may actually become more difficult.
If you start, I recommend completing
the planned number of sessions.
