Botox effects appear after 3 to 5 days in wrinkle areas, and after at least 2 weeks in muscle areas

Q. Does Botox work right after the injection?
A. It depends on the area. Wrinkles take 2~3 days,
while muscle areas like the jaw or trapezius
begin to change gradually after about a month.
Q. Does Botox work the same way on wrinkles and muscles?
A. It's the same Botox, but because the thickness of the target tissue and
the way it contracts are different, the timing of when the effect is felt is completely different.
📌 Key points of this article
Wrinkle Botox starts to feel tighter 2~3 days later,
and muscle Botox in areas like the jaw or trapezius
gradually reduces the line after about a month.

Botox is not an 'instant effect'
— the timing of how it works differs by area
"I got it yesterday, but I don't see any change."
That's something I hear very often in the clinic.
But the tricky thing is,
'No effect' and 'hasn't shown up yet' are
completely different stories.
The active ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin.
Simply put, it temporarily blocks
the nerve signals that make muscles move.
To contract, muscles need a signaling substance called 'acetylcholine'
to be released from the nerve,
and Botox blocks that release.
There's one important thing here.
This blocking does not complete 'instantly'.
After Botox is injected, it takes time to
fully bind to the nerve endings.
And that amount of time,
varies completely depending on which muscle it is.
Wrinkles, meaning areas like the glabella and forehead,
are thin facial muscles that contract quickly and frequently.
Because they are small and respond sensitively,
the time it takes for Botox to bind is also short.
After 2~3 days, you'll start to think, 'Huh? My expression feels a bit softer,'
and within a week you'll clearly feel that it has tightened.
On the other hand, the jaw (masseter) and trapezius are a different story.
These are thick, large muscles used every day when chewing,
and whenever you move your shoulders.
Even if the same amount of Botox is injected,
it takes longer to spread throughout the muscle and take effect.
So if people say, "I still can't tell" even after 1~2 weeks,
that's normal.
After a month, when they look in the mirror,
they start to think, 'Huh? The line seems a little different,'
and the full effect is best assessed between 6 and 8 weeks.
Honestly,
if you don't know this difference, you may end up getting unnecessary retreatment.
If you reinject after 3 weeks saying, "It doesn't work,"
there are quite a few cases in our clinic
where the area ends up drooping too much a month later.
👨⚕️ Director Wi Young-jin's Key Summary
Wrinkle Botox (forehead, glabella, eye area)
starts to feel tighter after 2~3 days,
and you can clearly confirm the effect within a week.
For thick muscle Botox such as the jaw and trapezius, the line
starts to gradually shrink after a month,
and the final result should be judged at 6~8 weeks.
Only decide that it has 'no effect' after enough time has passed.
If you rush into retreatment, it can backfire.

So in my case
how long should I wait?
— we take a different approach depending on the type
This is a part many people misunderstand,
The 'timing' of Botox effects depends not only on the area but also
on the condition of the individual's muscles.
① First-time patients
The muscles are not yet 'accustomed' to Botox.
Because the muscle itself has a strong habit of contracting,
the effect may feel slow to appear.
Even for those who think, "Is this really working?" at first,
if you keep it up for 2~3 sessions, the lasting effect becomes noticeably different.
② People with short retreatment intervals
People who come back and get injected again even though it's been less than 3 months, saying the effect has worn off,
may develop Botox resistance in this case.
More precisely, this is the formation of 'neutralizing antibodies',
where the body recognizes Botox as a foreign substance
and starts to neutralize it.
When that happens, it's hard to get an effect with the same amount.
It's best to keep at least a 4-month interval.
③ People with well-developed trapezius or masseter muscles
The larger the muscle volume, the more Botox needs to spread,
the more amount and time it requires.
It varies by case, but this is usually how I handle it.
For the first treatment, I inject the standard amount and have the patient come back after 6 weeks,
then I decide whether additional treatment is needed based on the result.
If you put in too much from the start, it becomes hard to adjust later.
But that doesn't mean it's always ideal.
Botox wears off over time.
It's not permanent, and muscles usually recover in 4~6 months.
So if you want to maintain the result, you need to keep getting it regularly,
and it's important to balance the interval and dosage well.
Many people said the line didn't improve even after 10 treatments elsewhere,
but were satisfied after 2~3 sessions at our clinic,
and in most cases, it was a matter of dosage adjustment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How should I take care of myself for a few days after Botox?
A. For 4~6 hours after the procedure, it's best to avoid lying down
or massaging the treated area.
Botox can spread to nearby muscles where you don't want it.
Also avoid drinking alcohol or doing intense exercise that day,
and it's safest to avoid saunas and jjimjilbangs for about 3 days.
If it's a wrinkle area, light makeup is possible after a day or two,
but when washing your face, avoid rubbing the area hard
for about a week.
Q2. It seems like the Botox effect disappears faster than I expected.
Why is that?
A. There are several reasons,
and the most common one is that the dosage wasn't sufficient.
The next is when antibodies form because the treatment intervals are too short,
and for people who exercise a lot,
the muscle metabolism is active, so Botox can break down faster.
If you feel the duration is short, it's not simply about getting more
injections, but about getting a consultation to strategically adjust the
dosage and interval.
Botox is not a treatment that finishes the moment you get it.
Knowing when the effect appears and waiting for it,
that's the first step toward better results.
I recommend getting a thorough consultation before the procedure and then deciding.
