How many Ultherapy sessions are needed for the jawline — the story of the 300-shot threshold
How many Ultherapy shots are right for the jawline? The common belief that more shots are better is actually a myth—300 shots is the tipping point. Beyond 500 shots, only the pain increases.

How many Ulthera shots are needed for the jawline
— The 300-shot threshold story
Last Wednesday, a 40-year-old
female client came into the clinic.
"Doctor, I've heard that other places say you need a full 600 shots
to see results,
so why do you recommend starting with 300 here?"
This was the fourth time I'd been asked that question this month alone.
So today, I want to explain it properly.

Ulthera all looks similar, right?
But the difference lies in the shot count
Ulthera is a lifting procedure that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
to deliver thermal energy to the skin's SMAS layer,
inducing collagen contraction and regeneration.
It's a lifting treatment.
Unlike other HIFU devices such as Shurink or Density,
Ulthera is distinguished by its transducer
that can reach a depth of 4.5 mm.
It is one of the few non-invasive devices that acts directly on
the fascial layer.
But what many people get confused about here is
the idea that "all Ulthera is the same."
That's the part they tend to assume.
Even with the same genuine Ulthera, where you shoot, how many shots you
deliver, and how deep you go
can completely change the result.
This is especially true for the jawline.

The real reason Ulthera jawline results differ
is the 300-shot mark
Director Wiyoungjin's
key insight
For Ulthera jawline, 300 shots per session is the threshold.
Below 200 shots, it is hard to even measure the effect,
and above 500 shots,
the additional benefit is minimal compared with the pain.
Usually, one session every 8 to 12 months
is the right range.
You've probably heard people say, "If you get Ulthera too often, your skin gets thinner."
In fact, the opposite is often true.
More often, it's the people who didn't see results because the shot count
was too low in a single session
who feel that getting it often still doesn't help.
To properly cover one side of the jawline,
combine the 4.5mm and 3.0mm transducers
and the minimum threshold is 150 shots; for both sides,
it's around 300 shots.
Below that, SMAS contraction occurs only at the point level,
so the jawline being lifted is not visible to the naked eye.
Collagen remodeling really begins
around week 4 after the procedure,
and peaks at week 12 (3 months).
Director Wiyoungjin's key summary
For Ulthera jawline, the first priority is not "how many times," but
"whether you get it done properly in one session."
Get 300 shots properly in one session and wait 3 months.
Then, one session every 8 to 12 months,
that's the most efficient plan.
Ulthera jawline: take a look at
which category you fall into
Type | Recommended shots | Retreatment interval | Anesthesia option |
First treatment (30s to 40s) | Jawline 300 shots | After 10 to 12 months | Topical anesthesia + pain reliever |
Retreatment (experienced) | 250 to 300 shots | Every 8 to 10 months | Topical anesthesia |
Heavy line, 40s to 50s | Jawline 400 shots | Every 8 months | Topical + sedation combined |
Pain-sensitive | 300 shots (can be split) | Every 12 months | Sedation recommended |
It's true that Ulthera is notorious for pain.
When the 4.5mm transducer reaches the nerves in the SMAS layer,
the sharp tingling pain is
hard to avoid.
If you apply topical anesthetic cream generously for more than 30 minutes,
and take a pain reliever 1 hour before the procedure,
the perceived pain drops by nearly half.
3 things clients
ask about most often
Q1. Isn't 600-shot Ulthera
twice as effective as 300 shots?
A. In the clinic,
it doesn't really work that way.
The difference in effect when going from 200 shots to 300 shots
is truly significant.
But when you go from 300 shots to 500 shots,
the additional effect only increases by 10 to 15%,
while the pain and swelling almost double.
Q2. Can I just get it once a year?
A. Rather than once a year, every 8 to 12 months
is the most appropriate interval.
If you get it too often, the benefit compared with the pain drops,
and if you wait too long,
you have to rebuild everything from the start, so it's inefficient.
Q3. Reviews saying their face hollowed out after Ulthera,
is that true?
A. In very rare cases, yes.
If someone with a thin face and little cheek fat
gets high output in the center of the cheeks,
it can look temporarily sunken.
But a treatment focused on the jawline and delivered accurately into the SMAS layer
has almost no risk of fat loss.
If you take only one thing away today
— for Ulthera jawline,
fill 300 shots in one session
and wait 3 months; that's the most efficient approach.
In the next post,
I'll explain how changes progress over the three months
after getting Ulthera.
