Honestly, I underestimated Revive swelling too

Honestly, I underestimated Revive swelling too
Bruising is Revive's known side effect, but swelling actually lasts longer. Glycerol is why.
Honestly, at first I also took Revive swelling lightly
Last Friday, in the treatment room,
a woman in her late 20s who said she would be emceeing a wedding
next Saturday came in.
"Doctor, can I get Revive once before I go?
I can hide the bruising, but my face
has to look good no matter what."
I told her to postpone it by a week.
Because of bruising and swelling.

Revive—aren't all skin boosters the same?
Revive is an injectable skin booster mixed with glycerol in hyaluronic acid (HA).
It is a procedure that fills the skin's dermis with both moisture and viscoelasticity at the same time.
If Rejuran stimulates the dermis with salmon DNA (PN)
to induce regeneration,
Revive is closer to the side that delivers immediate hydration and
elasticity with HA + glycerol.
So the nodular (palpable granule-like) feeling is
definitely less than with Rejuran.
But here's something people often don't know.
Why does Revive swelling stand out more for 2–3 days?
Director Wi Youngjin's key insight
Revive is HA + glycerol,
and it is injected deeper than Rejuran.
It causes less embossing than Rejuran,
but because it is a deeper injection, bruising can occur,
and glycerol attracts water, so swelling may stand out more for 2–3 days after the procedure.
Avoid it one week before an important event.
Honestly, at first I couldn't even see this pattern either.
The woman I mentioned earlier who was going to emcee a wedding
came in just for an initial consultation, and then
left saying, "I'll hold off for now."
Let me explain why.
The glycerol in Revive
is itself an ingredient that strongly attracts moisture.
In medical terms, it's called a humectant,
and it has the property of drawing water molecules from surrounding tissue toward itself.
(It may be even better for people without much facial fat)
So for the first 2–3 days after the procedure,
the injected area holds onto moisture
and becomes slightly plumper.
Rather than feeling lumpy like Rejuran,
it gives more of an impression of "looking swollen."
This is especially noticeable in photos on areas like
under the eyes or the cheekbones, where the skin is thin.

Based on how often I see it in the clinic,
bruising occurs in about 2–3 out of 10 people.
If the needle brushes a tiny blood vessel, there's nothing you can do.
It usually settles within 3–5 days.
But swelling is something almost everyone experiences,
though the degree varies.
For people with mild swelling, it goes down the next day,
but for those whose constitution tends to retain swelling easily,
it can last up to 4–5 days.

Director Wi Youngjin's key summary
Revive side effects last longer as swelling than as bruising.
That's because glycerol draws water in.
If you have a wedding, interview, or important meeting coming up, it's safest to get it at least 7–10 days in advance.
Pain management and combination strategies to reduce Revive swelling
So where do I fit in?
It differs by case,
but this is how I usually divide it.
Situation | Recommended timing | Anesthesia / combination |
|---|---|---|
Important event coming up | At least 7–10 days before | 30 minutes of topical anesthesia, standalone treatment |
Routine maintenance | Friday to Sunday with the weekend | Topical anesthesia alone is sufficient |
Want to combine with Rejuran | Separate by 2–3 weeks | Not on the same day (swelling adds up) |
Sensitive to pain | Avoid the latter half of the menstrual cycle | Topical anesthesia + ice pack |
There's one thing I definitely need to mention,
and that's that some people occasionally get Revive and Rejuran on the same day.
The idea is, "I'm getting both anyway, so I'll do them all at once,"
but if the swelling adds up, recovery takes more than a week longer.
I tell people to leave at least 2–3 weeks between them.

The three questions I get most often in the clinic
Q1. It's still swollen on day 4 and hasn't gone down. Is that normal?
A. Quite a few people last 4–5 days.
Especially people whose faces are usually puffy in the morning,
or who often eat salty food, take longer.
If the puffiness is still there after more than 7 days, then we should take a look,
but before that, it usually settles naturally.
Use ice packs and keep your pillow elevated.
There's another question very similar to this one.
Q2. Can't I get it early to hide bruising?
A. I also used to think only bruising was the issue,
but in reality, swelling is what gets in the way more.
Bruising can be covered to some extent with concealer,
but swelling shows up in photos as-is.
The cost is in the 300,000–500,000 KRW range per session,
and 3 sessions at 4-week intervals are the basic recommendation.
You can think of the effects lasting about 6 months.
This is the last question I get most often.
Q3. What do you do if side effects occur?
A. Revive does not cause necrosis like fillers do
That doesn't mean it has no side effects.
The side effects would be
unwanted major swelling and bruising.
Here's how to reduce swelling.
First, keep it cold on the day of the procedure through day 2.
Apply an ice pack for 5–10 minutes at a time, often.
Avoid saunas, strenuous exercise, and alcohol.
Second, if the pain gets worse after day 3, or
if only one side becomes red and swollen, contact us right away.
It's rare, but it could be a sign of infection,
so it's best for us to see you within 24 hours.
Third, if you can feel a lump,
Revive is HA-based, so it can be dissolved with
hyaluronidase. This is almost never used, but
you only need to know that the option exists.
If you take away just one thing today — with Revive, calculate glycerol swelling before bruising. The answer is to avoid it one week before an important event.
In the next post, I'll explain 'If you really want to get Revive and Rejuran together — how to plan the 2–3 week interval.' I'll show with cases how recovery differs when the same person has same-day treatment versus separate treatments. This has been Wi Youngjin.
